Retro Battle: Sonic 3 vs. Super Mario Bros 3!

When Smutty was a young snake-clown, I only owned a Nintendo. The Genesis was something I played at friends' homes. Guess I should not have spent all my allowance money on booze, right?

Today on 4chan's /vr/ board, there was an argument going which brought back some fond memories. Which is better, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for Genesis or Super Mario Bros 3 for NES?

Here are some replies by the anons...

Blows my mind that anyone who takes an objective look at them can actually prefer Sonic 3. Peel away Sonic's stylish art and music and you're left with something that's almost as on-rails as the later 3D entries. There's no actual substance to the level design. Mario 3 is at least an actual game that actually tries to kill you sometimes.

Sonic 3 if you just wanna play a quick easy game in one sitting. But if you want to get into a game and explore optional stuff and have some hard levels towards the end Mario 3 is better. also Sonic 3 has better music.

Three Marvel Fag Comics Cancelled After Award Nomination

Fag advocacy group GLAAD nominated three Marvel comics for their 2018 Outstanding Comic Book category. They were America, Black Panther: World of Wakanda, and Iceman. The good news is that all three have already been cancelled for low sales and therefore will not be actively indoctrinating children any longer.

Here are some reactions from 4chan's /co/ board

Catering to an unpleasible, ridiculously loud, vocal minority who never bought comics in the first place, while alienating your core demographic will probably cause you to fail. Yes.

When the main point of the comic is to highlight the characters gayness/race/whatever there's not much else you can do with that.

And that's what Marvels SJW division could never quite get. SJW characters are boring because that's all they can be. Combine that with vocally shitting on your customers for not liking their garbage and you got a perfect storm of people not buying your comics.

It’s because no one cares about this retarded crap. Queer people have the biggest sticks up their asses about everything. These people have cultivated a culture of shouting at things until they’re quiet and acting like they fixed something when they didn’t change shit. It’s why Trump got as far as he did and it’s why people don’t buy comics for fags.

Is the rebooted DuckTales (2017-) Worth Watching?

When Smutty was a young snake-clown — late 80s, early 90s — he enjoyed watching the Disney Afternoon tv block. The DuckTales cartoon was maybe the most likable of all shows. It had a crack-level-addictive theme song, glued-to-the-tv stories, and fan-worthy characters. Who was not always hoping that Scrooge would find gold or that the Beagle Boys would rob the city's banks, or accomplish whatever the hell else they were trying to do that day?

Now Disney, besides buying up most of the trash-entertainment companies on earth, is going back to the DuckTales well. The new cartoon series began airing in August 2017 and has already been renewed for a second season.

Seeing how the sequel hardly ever lives up to the original, and how Disney becomes more gay each year, is the new DuckTales worth our time? Let's ask the anons on 4chan's /co/ board:

Generic "plays it safe" jokes. Feels like entire show is put through a TVTropes machine and it pumps out a script.

    As opposed to?

Seriously, what was edgy or subversive about the original Ducktales?

As opposed to a show where giving the characters individual personalities and actors rather than voice actors would make you think the comedic timing would be sharper and a lot less dull. I never made a comparison that it was generic compared to old Ducktales, just generic in general. Don't get so offended because one person in this thread dislikes the show, DucktalesFag.

    >hypercompetent females
>dopey, emasculated and inept males
>frequent focus on Webby as protagonist
>the “lore”
>the “jokes”
It’s shit.

Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry?

In one corner, you have Ninja Gaiden, a champ in the industry since the late 80s. The series began in the arcades and then was ported to the NES.

Fighting out of the other corner, you have Devil May Cry. He got his start in the PlayStation 2 era — 2001 to be exact. Now he has spawned to PS3, PS4, and the Xbox systems.

Who will win this epic clash? Let's go to 4chan's /v/ board for the decision, and for some more ramblings...

Actually Devil May Cry 1 and Ninja Gaiden are very similar in the fact that their combat focuses on brutal efficiency. DMC3 and DMC4 are about spectacle, which is why the enemy design is usually shit but the boss design is good.

Just finished Ninja Gaiden 2 on MN a couple of days ago. Landing that OT on the final boss felt amazing, the afterflow is still there. Such a wonderful game.

assuming we're only counting the 3D games

Devil May Cry has 3 good games
Ninja Gaiden has 1.

Devil May Cry is better.

DMC has 2 great games and 1 okay game. The rest are bad.
NG has 2 great games and 1 meh game that needed to be fixed by a re-release.

So yeah going by this we could say DMC is the better franchise but it isn't by much. If you're going to go this route than I would say GOW has them both beat because all of its games are at least good even if none reach the height of greatness of the other two. The only bad GOW will be the reboot that is coming out.

Star Fox SNES '93, Still Fun Today?

Hey, Smutty remembers playing Star Fox in "Super FX" on Super Nintendo! It was one of the first that looked 3D. Now that today there are thousands of 3D games in existence, Smutty appreciates 2D games more.

Anyway, 4chan's /vr/ board was talking about Star Fox today...

When it came out it was amazing. It was a 3-d game that played well, had great level design, and was fun - all on a 16-bit system. Compared to the awful 3-d shit on 3DO and Jaguar at the time, this was great. It isn't all that special now, but 24 years ago it was incredible.

The Aristocats (1970), Once Upon a Time Disney made Art

Smutty here with another classic animation film!

4chan's /co/ board was rambling about The Aristocats (1970) today. This is one of those Disney movies that was made with artists and hands, instead of computers and formulas. CEO Michael Eisner had not brought the company down yet.

Here are some of the anon takes on Aristocats. I'm going to start out with somebody who agrees with Smutty!

From an artistic standpoint, it's really nice. The water color backgrounds mixed with the oil paints is a nice touch, along with Milt Kahl animating sequences, and the "sketchy" aesthetic that goes with it.

Yeah plot-wise, it's kind of safe and inoffensive, but this was back when Disney movies were meant to be watch for the value of the art, and not so much for the plot. I guess that philosophy changed somewhere in the 80s.

F-Zero X (N64), Among Other Retro Racers

Smutty was on 4chan /vr/ today when somebody went and started a F-Zero X thread. It was one of the best games on Nintendo 64, and it warmed my snake-clown heart to see the anons remembering it.

Smutty also has great memories of the Super Nintendo version, which was the original. It was one of the SNES launch titles way back in 1990. F-Zero X was then released for the N64 on July 14, 1998 (Japan).

Anyways here are some anon comments...

Game was too hard for me, it was literally so fast and frantic that I couldn't maintain proper control most of the time and ended up falling to my death or just sustaining enough damage to die.

I was never an expert on the original F-Zero, mind you, but I could still at least clear a few cups. Did they purposely increase the difficulty or is it just a natural result of switching from 2D to 3D?

This seems to happen to a lot of people as I've mentioned with my experiences with local multiplayer.

F-Zero X is actually pretty different from the original one since the courses are actual 3D this time in design, and also the control and physics. It also has analogue controls.

I suggest giving it more time, play the easier difficulties first to get used to the physics.

About the controls: don't use Z/R to take corners since it slows you down way too much. The best way to turn in this game is to move your stick very slowly, and if you can't turn in time press Z+Z or R+R. In this state you can't lose grip so you can turn fast for a brief period of time; it's a really cool mechanic. I mention this since, while this not happens in cruising top speed, if you are on any kind of boosting you risk losing grip by turning too fast even with high grip ships. It also functions as an attack with whom you can kill other racers, and you'll need to master this for the harder difficulties.

If you have a hard time getting used to not losing the grip play heavy ships since as they turn more slowly it'll be more manageable. You can unlock all the ships and stuff by inputting a code. If you don't like this then start with the Fire Stingray from the first row, it's not a good ship in the long run but it'll help you get used to the game with its high weight, grip and body HP.

Oh, and btw, if you still have some problems tuning without losing the grip try tapping the A button and/or stopping to press it briefly. This is not as good or essential as in SNES's F-Zero but it's still good for beginners and tough spots.

16-bit Greatness: Streets of Rage 2 (Sega Genesis)

4chan's /vr/ was reminiscing today about one of the greatest games for the Sega Genesis. Streets of Rage 2 was a kick-ass, side-scrolling masterpiece that was released in North America on December 20, 1992. The main characters were Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding (girl), Eddie "Skate" Hunter, and Max "Thunder" Hatchett.

The soundtrack was produced by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. Koshiro is largely considered to be the best composer of the 16-bit era. He is still composing music for games today, with Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom being a recent project which will be released in 2018.

Cartoon Memories: Invader Zim (2001-04)

Today on 4chan's /co/, the anons were remembering Nickelodeon's Invader Zim (2001-04). This retro cartoon had a huge fan base during its day. Let's see what they think of it now...

Why is this show so based?
>Unique style
>Blend of 3d cgi and 2d animation (Done right, because I've seen other shows pull it off and it looks nasty)
>Dark humor and satire directly thrown in face
>Characters fucking die on screen

It does have its drops but for the time it was produced it's outstanding.

I remembered liking it as a kid so I went back and watched it. God it was grating. The humour has really aged poorly, considering it was mostly the word taco or muffin mentioned either as often as possible or when you thought they were done with the joke. There is some really great stuff there, great plot lines with legitimately horrifying events and implications, as well as occasionally funny stuff. I'd like an edited version where every shot with Gir is taken out.

Reactions to Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie (2017)

On November 24, 2017, Nickelodeon brought back a much loved cartoon series, by airing a brand-new film. Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie (2017) was finally realized, using a script that was begun in 1998.

It was a dream come true for some fans, of a show which had not seen a new episode or movie release since 2002. However, others fans responded very differently. (even dramatically claiming it ruined their childhood!)

Here are a variety of early reactions from 4chan's /co/ board:
