When Smutty was a young snake-clown, I only owned a Nintendo. The Genesis was something I played at friends' homes. Guess I should not have spent all my allowance money on booze, right?

Today on 4chan's /vr/ board, there was an argument going which brought back some fond memories. Which is better, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for Genesis or Super Mario Bros 3 for NES?

Here are some replies by the anons...

Blows my mind that anyone who takes an objective look at them can actually prefer Sonic 3. Peel away Sonic's stylish art and music and you're left with something that's almost as on-rails as the later 3D entries. There's no actual substance to the level design. Mario 3 is at least an actual game that actually tries to kill you sometimes.

Sonic 3 if you just wanna play a quick easy game in one sitting. But if you want to get into a game and explore optional stuff and have some hard levels towards the end Mario 3 is better. also Sonic 3 has better music.

Going with Mario 3, but it was a tough call. Ultimately it came down to the fact that Sonic 3 was half a game, and fans had to make the Sonic 3 complete patch for the game to even live up to it's fullest potential, meanwhile, Mario 3 is a whole game and I can't think of any way that it could be improved on.

Is this a serious question? Sonic 3 isn't even the best Sonic. SMB3 is often called the best video game ever.

I played both as a kid and the choice was clear.

Besides, mario can breathe underwater and fly by himself, something Sonic can only dream of.

While it's true older sonic games have much better music than their Mario counterparts they also don't fit the games as well. Marios music just fits thats world.

Sonic 3. If we're talking about Sonic 3 and Knuckles. This shouldn't even be a debate. Sonic 3&K had better more interesting level design with greater avenues for exploration, (I'm STILL finding areas of the game I didn't know existed, like a Tails-Only route in Death Egg Zone) better more interesting level themes which include a variety of enemy designs, better soundtrack to go with those themes, & knuckles.

Does Mario 3 have knuckles? Fuck no.

I always thought Sonic 3 was a step down from Sonic 1 and 2 graphically.
His sprite looks like a vaseline model with crossed eyes, his shoes look like they're somehow inflated. The overall art design is less psychedelic, long gone are the trademark checkered patterns on the soil of the first level, and while it is a colorful game, the color palette is less variated and goes for a more realistic look instead of a trippy psychedelic one as on previous games.
To be fair, Sonic & Knuckles brought back the checkered patterns on Mushroom Hill but meh.

The only concrete point I ever hear in defense of Sonic's gameplay over Mario's is "exploration", and I've never understood why that was supposed to be a virtue anyway. It almost reminds me of open world fanboys. "Hurr you can walk lots of places that means it's good".

You think Sonic 3 isn't challenging? Because it sure is on some parts, especially the bonus stages. However there's a difference between challenging and impossible. SMB3 is impossible to beat without cheats, power ups or save states. Mario games have a bad habit of not allowing the player to advance without something to help them or having pure luck(such as jumping over huge gaps landing on a tiny platform & jumping to the next platform in a quick succession). Everything has to be perfect with Mario or you'll lose. I practically had no choice but to use a game genie to make any Mario game beatable except for Super Mario World because that one seems easier than the previous Mario games. There's nothing fun about getting frustrated losing lives left & right just because I couldn't make an impossible jump or dodge some bullets while trying to hit an enemy.

    SMB3 by a mile.

I really enjoy Sonic 3; it's my favorite in the series, very exciting aesthetically, and has far better music than SMB3. But Sonic 3 really isn't that challenging or engaging, you can cruise through most of the game pretty mindlessly. SMB3, on the other hand, has a perfectly-paced difficulty curve and the level design is absolutely brilliant.
